Oral Manifestations of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or Aids

 
The pictures below show some of the presenting mouth and oral cavity disorders which can be found in AIDS.   These are especially worrisome if occurring at the same time or in the case of shingles at a young age.  If seen you should obtain an AIDS test.  It is now recommended that all adults be routinely tested at least once in their life.    

Oral Manifestations are a sign of systemic aids.

Hairy Tongue:  Although often associated with smoking it can also be associated with AIDS.

Angular Chelitis:  This can be caused by drooling but is a fungal infection which can be seen in aids.

Aphtosis Ulcers:  A shallow painful ulcer which is commonly seen in middle aged individuals can also be a sign of AIDS

Herpes Simplex:  Herpes of the lips is a common condition, often referred to as a cold sore.  It also can be a hallmark of AIDS.

 

 


Cold Sores Caused by Herpes Simplex Virus


Shingles:  Herpes zoster or shingles is the reactivation of the chicken pox virus.  It almost always occurs in older individuals.  If this presents in the middle aged or young adult a test for AIDS should be performed.

Viral Somatitis:  This is a rare condition and should raise the suspicion of possible AIDS. 


Mucositis caused by herpes simplex virus


Human Papillomavirus:  HPV Warts can also be seen in AIDS, especially if multiple and recurrent. 



Oral Candidiasis:  This is an infection caused by the Yeast Fungus.  It almost always indicates immunosupression.  It can be seen in patient's taking topical steroid inhalers.  This condition should also raise the suspicion of AIDS.
