This patient is a 75 year old with a left
true vocal cord
paralysis from metastatic breast carcinoma to the
mediastinum.
In this area the cancer causes the paralysis by damaging the
recurrent laryngeal nerve
nerve as it loops around the aortic arch. It was an
abductor muscle
paralysis and the left vocal
cord had a central position giving the patient a good voice.
